First, carefully remove all wood
trim panels form their packing. Inspect to insure that the proper number of panels are
present.
Dry fit all panels before any
installation is done. This is to make sure that there are no problems with the fit, or the
wood kit. It helps to trace around the panels with a pencil. This will give you a guide
line for the actual installation. The pencil marks are easily removed with a damp cloth.
Scrub, with a solvent saturated
clean cotton cloth, all interior surfaces that wood panels will cover. This is a very
important step, especially if your dash has been treated with Armor All or similar
products. Solvents to use are Prepsol, Prekleeno, Petroleum Naptha, or their equivalent.
Then wipe the surface down thoroughly with a clean cotton cloth using isopropyl alcohol or
a 50/50 denatured alcohol water mixture or heptane. (Note: Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol
ONLY will not cut plasticizers and silicones on vehicle dash. This will result in tape not
bonding properly.) All areas to be covered by wood dash kit must be cleaned. When
installing in used vehicles or new vehicles that have been detailed, check for Armor-All
or other dash preservatives. If they are present it may be necessary to repeat the
cleaning process until all traces of the preservatives are removed. Care should be
exercised when cleaning outside the area to be covered by the wood dash kit and is not
recommended.
Dry fit panels several times to
make sure when you apply the panels, you are not in an awkward position, as this could
cause misalignment of the kit. It is a good idea to position yourself directly in front of
, or over the part you're putting on, to get proper alignment. Remember that when the tape
touches the dash, you can't pull it off, or move it. Ideal application temperature range
is 70 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Application below 70 degrees Fahrenheit is not recommended
because tape is too firm to adhere readily. Product must be preheated. It is strongly
recommended that you place the kit, with tape up, on cardboard in the sun. Placing it on
the top of the dash, in the sun, for approx. 1/2 hour should do it. When installing kit,
start at one side and work through any bows or dips. Make sure not to bridge any areas.
Don't stick top and bottom of a part, then try to stick the middle. Start at the top or
bottom and work through each bend pushing it in place as you work through the bend or dip.
It is very much like laying a linoleum floor, you start at one corner and work to the
other end , being careful not to trap any air bubbles behind it. For large panels, it
helps to have a friend hold one end of the panel away from the dash while you start on the
other end, working the panel toward him. Press it out with the palm of your hand as you go
to ensure a perfect fit.
A final cleaning is recommended
after the wood kit is installed. Use a soft cotton cloth with a light amount of Prepsol by
DuPont on the face of the wood dash kit. Be sure not to get Prepsol behind the kit onto
the tape, as it could cause the tape to weaken. Cleaning is much easier when the wood dash
kit is cool. A nice finishing touch is a small amount of Pledge sprayed on a soft clean
cotton cloth (do not spray on dash) and wiped over the face of the wood dash kit. Follow
by polishing with a clean soft cotton cloth.
That's it. Now you are ready to
enjoy the rich beauty of a real wood interior. Happy Motoring.
